Nudi vs. Baraha: Which Kannada Software Should You Use?

For over two decades, Kannada typists have primarily relied on two main software packages to type in their native language: Nudi and Baraha. While both were revolutionary at their time, they serve very different workflows today.

Here is a breakdown of the differences, and which one you should be using.

The Nudi Software

Nudi was developed by the Kannada Ganaka Parishat and is officially recognized by the Government of Karnataka.

Pros of Nudi

• Government Standard: It is widely used in Karnataka state government offices.
• Keyboard Layout: It utilizes a specific typewriter-style layout that professional typists learn in shorthand schools.
• Desktop Publishing: Extremely robust for use with Adobe PageMaker and CorelDRAW because of its specific font encoding system.

Cons of Nudi

• Legacy Encoding: Older versions of Nudi use ASCII mapping, meaning the text is unreadable on the web without converting it to Unicode.
• Steep Learning Curve: The keyboard layout is not intuitive for casual users.

The Baraha Software

Baraha was one of the first software to popularize phonetic typing for Indian languages.

Pros of Baraha

• Phonetic Typing: You type exactly how it sounds in English (e.g., typing "kannada" outputs "ಕನ್ನಡ"). This makes it incredibly easy for beginners.

The Verdict

If you are a professional typist handling government documents or legacy desktop publishing workflows, Nudi remains the undisputed king due to its layout and widespread administrative adoption.

If you are a casual user, content creator, or someone who prefers English phonetics, Baraha is significantly easier to use.

However, if you are simply trying to type Kannada for Facebook, WhatsApp, or a modern website, you shouldn't be using the legacy encodings of either software!
