How to Install and Type in Kannada on Windows 11 & Mac

Gone are the days when you needed to download complex third-party software like Nudi or Baraha just to type a message in Kannada on your computer. Modern operating systems fully support Kannada Unicode out of the box!

Here is how you can set up native Kannada typing on both Windows 11 and macOS in just a few minutes.

How to Type Kannada on Windows 11

Windows 11 includes excellent native support for Indian languages, including a highly accurate Phonetic keyboard.

1. Open your Start Menu and go to Settings.
2. Click on Time & language in the left sidebar, then select Language & region.
3. Under "Preferred languages", click the Add a language button.
4. Search for Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ), select it, and click Next, then Install.
5. Once installed, click the three dots (...) next to Kannada in the language list and choose Language options.
6. Scroll down to the "Keyboards" section and click Add a keyboard.
7. Select Kannada Phonetic. (This allows you to type in "Kanglish" and it will automatically convert to Kannada!).
8. You can now press Windows Key + Spacebar to instantly switch between English and your new Kannada phonetic keyboard!

How to Type Kannada on Mac (macOS)

Apple has also built excellent phonetic and native script keyboards into macOS.

1. Click the Apple logo () in the top-left corner and open System Settings.
2. Scroll down to Keyboard in the left sidebar.
3. In the "Text Input" section, click the Edit... button next to "Input Sources".
4. Click the small + (plus) button in the bottom left corner.
5. Search for Kannada in the language list.
6. You will see options like Kannada, Kannada - QWERTY, etc. Select your preferred layout and click Add.
7. Check the box that says "Show Input menu in menu bar".
8. You will now see a small flag or language icon in the top right corner of your Mac menu bar. Click it to switch to Kannada and start typing anywhere!
